Dismantle Magazine has issues…Quarterly issues, that is!

Soon Dismantle will be publishing quarterly issues, rather than weekly posts!

When we officially launched Dismantle Magazine in September 2018, it made sense to publish our essays and articles on a weekly(ish) basis. It’s been going great since then. We’ve brought you 200 pieces from more than 65 writers, artists and activists committed to our mission of bringing critical, engaging analysis of fashion and pop culture to the world.

So Why Are We Switching to Issues?

We’ve learned some stuff over the last few years. As we reflect on who we are and what we want to be, our hope is to honor these lessons and keep moving forward in the best possible way for us and our readers.

For instance, we discovered that we continue to be oddballs in the publishing world, just as we were in academia! We’re not really a “magazine” and we don’t always publish “articles”. Much about our process, format, etc., is more like a literary journal than a news or entertainment outlet. Our writers continue to pitch creative work that pushes boundaries of cultural analysis and tells engaging and urgent stories.

We’ve also confirmed that publishing on a consistent basis is really tough – especially with a two-person operation! This makes Dismantle vulnerable to personal and societal disruptions, which we seem to be facing more often than ever before.

By switching to quarterly issues, each piece of the publishing process — reviewing submissions, editing, formatting, promoting, and so on — will get the time and attention it needs.

Plus, we can focus our attention on growing Dismantle in other ways! We have new ideas for Dismantle Education that we’re excited to unveil over the next several months. Additionally, Sara and Elise are gearing up to teach another course based on their work as Dismantle editors and writing coaches. We also just need more time and energy to keep growing our reach! These things are more manageable if we give ourselves space with issue-based publishing.

What This Means For You

For now, you won’t see new pieces drop on Mondays. Sara and Elise are hard at work creating Dismantle’s first issue – set to publish this summer!! Our essay contributors are deep in the drafting and revision process, and we’ve culled an incredible group of essays from both new and veteran writers. Meanwhile, we’ll keep sharing work from our archives and highlighting the great things our writers do.

In the meantime, we appreciate your continued support. We’d love to have you join us on Patreon if you haven’t yet! We’re so close to our next monthly goal. And when we reach it, we’ll throw an exciting online event that we know many of our readers won’t want to miss.
